Insomnia and CBD products I’ve found effective

I’ve suffered with insomnia for all of my adult life and it’s a constant struggle trying to get a good night’s sleep (or any sleep some nights) I’ve tried a few products now to try and tackle this and I wanted to share my experience.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most prevalent chemical compounds in the cannabis plant. Unlike the more famous molecule, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is completely non psychoactive so therefore will not get you high. Firstly I need to say that, some of my trouble sleeping is caused by pain and anxiety. Taking CBD regularly has helped this but I find most CBD products stimulating and therefore can’t take them after 5pm. I have tried many products which are reported to be relaxing but with limited success. These are the ones that have worked for me.

CBG

The first product I found effective isn’t CBD at all but another cannabinoid called CBG (Cannabigerol). I started taking CBG crystal isolate a few months ago and my sleep improved instantly. It has a lovely calming effect both mentally and physically and I find it mildly sedating. I take my CBD oil as normal during the day and CBG crystal isolate before bed. I use the CBG isolate from The Leaf and Oil Company Ltd but they also a CBG oil. Canavape Limited also sell a CBG oil and add CBG to some of their CBD products.

Molytor Nights CBD oil

The most recent product I’ve tried is called Molytor nights (CBD oil) from Molytor. It has an added Indica terpene profile which provides the relaxing properties of Cannabis Indica, which I find very relaxing and helps me sleep. Please note it’s actually made from Sativa strain, just with the terpene profile of an Indica strain. The most predominant terpene present is Myrcene, which is known to be a sedative, sleep aid and muscle relaxant. I was actually quite surprised at how effective this was when I first tried it and I now take it most nights before bed. Don’t underestimate the power of terpenes.

Hemp Tea

Although I don’t find hemp tea sedating, I do find it relaxing and calming. I drink it as part of my bedtime routine, along with one of the above products. I use Zenon Hemp tea which can be purchased from Fiddler’s Elbow Grease – Hemp Balm

I’ve recently found another CBD product that is effective for my insomnia so I thought I would update my post.

CBDLife UK 40% PurePen- Granddaddy Purple cartridge.

I don’t vape very much but I was instantly impressed with this vape pen and cartridge. Unlike some other vape liquids I’ve tried, it’s very smooth without a throat hit. The cartridge I use is the Granddaddy Purple one (nighttime profile) It contains the terpene profile of a relaxing strain. Yet again terpenes have proved their power. It’s instantly relaxing and is now part of my nighttime routine.

You are not going to get a strong sedating effect like with sleeping tablets with any CBD/CBG products but years of taking sleeping tablets have made me immune to their effects anyway. What I can say is that with a reduction in my pain and anxiety levels caused by taking CBD oil regularly, and with the mild sedating and calming effects I experienced with these products, I’m sleeping better than I have in years. My quality of my sleep has also improved.

    Thanks so much for the wealth of information you make so easily accessible to us – I’m only just starting my CBD journey and it’s super confusing!
    I have had trouble sleeping for the last couple of years and nothing else is working so after hearing some people are having success with CBD here I am…
    I wondered which of the above you would recommend to someone new to CBD? Also I noticed you use the words both sedation and sleep. I understand there is a difference and would like to know your thoughts…due to the insomnia I have become somewhat obsessed with sleep as a subject of study and am desperate to find a way to get me some deep, light and REM sleep, as opposed to something to just knock me out…which is also why I’ve avoided sleeping pills from the doctor.
    Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome!

    1. Unfortunately the products I have been using to help with sleep have been out of stock for a while. If you are new to CBD you may benefit from taking a low dose of a full spectrum CBD oil 3 times a day, rather than just taking something at night. CBD can help regulate sleep with its interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, but it can take a few weeks to feel the full benefits.
